Return to The Uncalled Four D&D Sessions

NOTE: Most of this session was the battle with the spiders in the belfry. It's from 0:00 to 1:50:00 below, Cinder's death :( is at 10:01. 1:50:01 to 2:15:00 is the treasure room beyond the belfry, 2:15:01 to 2:30:00 is the encounter with Leif Lipsage the Accountant, and 2:30:01 to 2:33:00 is finding a place for a long rest for the night.
In this Dungeons and Dragons gameplay session, the party had reached a room they were directed to by the accountant guy, which was covered in cobwebs and had a rope hanging from the ceiling. Knohm attempted to climb the rope but it rang a bell, causing five giant spiders to drop down on them. The group then entered combat, with everyone rolling initiative to determine the order of actions. Gareth and Svetlana were not present during this encounter. Mark, who was present, targeted the closest giant spider with his longbow. It's unclear whether the spider was successfully hit or if any actions were taken against the spiders by the other party members. The DM is checking to see if the spider has been targeted correctly and waiting for further rolls and actions from the players.
05:01 to 10:00
Clarity took a turn and aimed her sling at one of the giant spiders. However, she realized she was out of ammo. The DM allowed her to quickly gather more stones for her sling and she rolled an attack against the spider, resulting in a miss. It is now the turn of the third giant spider in the encounter.
10:01 to 15:00
The giant spider attacked Cinder, dealing enough damage to kill her character. The DM then froze due to technical difficulties. Lyle's character, Knohm, wanted to stay high in the rope and use spells to protect the party from above. However, the DM found that Knohm had no useful spells for this situation except for oil that he could set on fire and one dart. The DM also mentioned that Lyle's character was an illusionist and suggested the "Phantasmal Force" spell as a possible option to create an illusion in combat.
15:01 to 20:00
The party member Knohm was discussing with the DM potential options for protecting his allies from giant spiders during combat. The DM explained that Knohm's illusionist character could create illusions to scare or distract the spiders, but those illusions could be attacked and disbelieved by the spiders. The DM also mentioned that the spiders were animals and therefore may not be influenced by the "Hypnotism" spell. The DM suggested Knohm's character could instead throw darts or dip a different oil in fire and throw it, but expressed concerns about the flammability of the room. The DM also mentioned that they typically play characters who are not present at a lower level to make gameplay more manageable.
20:01 to 25:00
A party member named Azrodoth used a spell called "Ray of Enfeeblement" against one of the giant spiders that had just killed the familiar. The DM explained that the spell had a range of 10 feet plus 3 feet per level, and he targeted the spider in front of him. The spell was successful and reduced the strength of the affected spider by 25% for the next turn, reducing its damage output by a third. The DM then moved on to the next round of combat, with the fifth spider moving to stand next to another party member named Gareth and attacking him.
25:01 to 30:00
A giant spider attacked party member Clarity, but rolled a natural 20 and dealt negative damage, healing her instead. The DM then moved on to the next round of combat, with another spider moving underneath party member Knohm and attacking Clarity again. Clarity took three points of damage from the attack. Party member Gareth was up next and decided to attack one of the spiders that was near him. The DM asked for his choice and he made a "boop" sound, indicating that he wanted to attack without choosing a specific target. The DM then had to troubleshoot technical difficulties with the camera during this part of the gameplay session.
30:01 to 35:00
Several players had trouble selecting their targets and using their abilities due to technical difficulties with the camera and menus. One player used a dart against a spider but missed, while another used a two-handed sword and hit, dealing 9 points of damage to one of the spiders. One player noted that the AC of the spiders was higher than expected. The DM then moved on to the next round of combat, automatically rolling initiative for the players.
35:01 to 40:00
In this Dungeons and Dragons gameplay session, the remaining players continued to fight against the giant spiders. Knohm used a dart to hit one of the spiders for one point of damage, while Azdoroth cast "Shonking Grass" (Shocking Grasp) and dealt 11 points of lightning damage to another spider. John moved his character out of the way to allow Ismark to attack, and Ismark used his longbow to hit a spider with a natural 20, dealing six points of damage but leaving it still alive. ZugZug used his crossbow to hit a spider on the upper right for six points of damage, but the spider remained alive as well. Svetlana was unable to see due to camera issues and couldn't take her turn.
40:01 to 45:00
The players continued to fight against the giant spiders. NPC Meredith joined the fight and used a pullarm to hit one of the spiders for 20 points of damage, but the spider remained alive. Svetlana tried to attack a spider with her short sword but missed. Gareth then hit a spider with his two-handed sword, but the spider rolled a natural 20 and bit him for two points of damage. The spider in the back corner moved forward but did not attack that round. Ireena was called to take her turn, but another player had audio issues and was given a minute to join the game.
45:01 to 50:00
A player named Jason joined late due to technical difficulties. The party was still fighting against the giant spiders that had dropped on them in the previous session. Svetlana had already attacked twice with her crossbow, hitting once and missing once. Ireena then attacked one of the remaining spiders with her two-handed sword and killed it. A spider bit Gareth for three points of damage, slowly whittling him down. Azgaroth used his mirror image ability to confuse the remaining spider, which missed its attack. The players rolled initiative to begin round three of combat. Jason struggled to find the combat screen and roll his initiative, Bruce joked about needing to relearn it every time they play.
50:01 to 55:00
Clarity rolled for initiative and missed one of the remaining spiders. Knohm then threw a dart at a spider near Azgaroth but missed as well. Gareth rolled for initiative and hit his target spider. Jason had to step away from the call due to work-related matters but expressed his love for the group. Gareth hit another spider, and the players waited for Jason to return.
55:01 to 1:00:00
The players continued to fight against the remaining giant spiders. ZugZug used his crossbow and hit one of the spiders, and then Azrodoth attacked with his staff but missed. Svetlana killed another spider, leaving only three left. Ismark shot an arrow at the bottom right spider but missed, and Irina swung her sword at the upper right spider but also missed. The remaining spider chose to attack Irina, who took 5 points of damage.
1:00:01 to 1:05:00
One spider missed its attack against Gareth, and then another hit him for 6 points of damage, leaving Gareth with less than half his health. The players moved on to round four, rolled initiative, and waited for Alicia to return from getting a drink. The group discussed the old man's request for them to retrieve a holy symbol of Ravenkind in exchange for information or something specific. Clarity rolled her initiative and decided to roll her own dice instead of using the Foundry dice that John was rolling for her. The group is continuing their fight against the spiders while discussing their mission to retrieve the holy symbol.
1:05:01 to 1:10:00
Svetlana moved to a new position and used her edmieflail against one of the remaining giant spiders, but missed. Gareth had less than half his health and decided to retreat from the combat. Knohm threw a dart at another spider but also missed due to a negative three roll. Zud Zug then rolled twice, hitting AC 23 and AC 26 on two separate attacks against one of the spiders, but was unable to find the option to damage it in the game interface. The players are still fighting against the remaining giant spiders, with some members retreating due to low health.
1:10:01 to 1:15:00
Bruce rolled a 1d6 physically and added one to get a five, which reduced damage for an attack against one of the remaining giant spiders. Azeroth used her magic to kill another spider with a silver dagger. Irina attacked a spider in the back using her two-handed bastard sword and did eight points of slashing damage. The second spider missed its attack against Irina, who then turned her attention to Ismark, who was still running the character. Ismark was using a longbow and missed his shot at the remaining giant spider. The players continue fighting the last two spiders in the room.
1:15:01 to 1:20:00
The player experienced technical difficulties with their phone and was unable to communicate for a brief period. Once they returned, Ismark missed his shot at one of the remaining spiders. The last two giant spiders attacked Azdoroth but both misses. Azdoroth then targeted one of the spiders in front of him using her staff and did four points of damage. Zud Zug tried to use a component pouch but rolled poorly, missing his shot. Gareth also missed with "Dodd dammit," a magic spell. The players continued fighting against the last two giant spiders in the room.
1:20:01 to 1:25:00
Ismark missed his shot at one of the remaining spiders. GKnohm rolled a two and hit one of the spiders in the bottom corner. Irina missed her attack against the closest spider. The players then discussed the technical issues that were occurring during the game and some of them had to leave the session. John suggested using his wall of fire spell to burn the remaining spiders, but no action was taken.
1:25:01 to 1:30:00
In the next section of the DnD session, no spiders were able to hit any of the players. Svetlana missed her attack against the spider in front of her. Zud Zug attacked the middle spider with his crossbow and dealt five points of damage. Irina also missed her attack. The players then discussed whether to continue using a sling or switch to a short sword for attacks, ultimately deciding to use the short sword. Clarity then targeted a spider but it is not specified which one they attacked.
1:30:01 to 1:35:00
Gareth missed his attack with a dagger against one of the remaining spiders. Doroth attacked with his staff and dealt six points of damage, killing one of the bottom spiders. Ismark missed his longbow shot at another spider. The spider in the back that could only target Irina missed its attack. The remaining spider in the middle targeted Azdoroth but no roll was mentioned for this attack. Round seven began with Doroth rolling initiative for Gareth, Clarity and Knohm.
1:35:01 to 1:40:00
Zud Zug moved back on top of a dead spider but was too far to take any action. He then tried to attack the remaining spider with his short sword and missed. Clarity attacked the spider next to her and rolled a 20, hitting the spider with a 1d6 plus one damage roll. The spider that remained had only one target left, Azdoroth, who also missed his attacks against the spider. The gnome continued throwing darts but hit his own toe instead.
1:40:01 to 1:45:00
Svetlana moved to attack a spider with her staff and missed. Fetlana rolled a one on initiative and attacked first in round eight. Meredith used her short sword plus two against a spider but was unable to do so due to the death of the spider next to her and Azdoroth moving in. Instead, she used her sling and rolled an 18, hitting the spider with 1-4 damage (2 total). Zud Zug had only one target left, a remaining spider. He attacked with his staff and dealt four points of damage. Gareth also had only one target left, Azdoroth. However, he rolled a 7 on initiative, putting him at the bottom of the list for this round.
1:45:01 to 1:50:00
Gareth grappled a spider and dealt 1 point of damage with it. Svetlana used her polearm and rolled a 20, dealing 10 points of damage to kill a spider (roll for possible hit on Gareth was not needed). The players then received experience points for the encounter: 2325 XP divided by 8, which is approximately 291 XP each.
1:50:01 to 1:55:00
The players received 291 XP each for completing the encounter with the spiders. Gareth healed Svetlana using a cure light wounds spell but accidentally healed the spider instead. The group then moved to search for secret doors in the room, with Irina and Jason failing and Lyle succeeding in finding one. Azdoroth found a second secret door, revealing what was inside the room.
1:55:01 to 2:00:00
The players found and searched a room with chests and cobwebs. Irina found a necklace and an amulet on top of one of the chests. The group then tried to detect traps, but failed. Clarity rolled a D100 to search for traps in the bottom left ones, also failing. The group decided to keep trying to detect traps or move to different locations to continue searching. Noam searched the north side of the room and failed to find anything.
2:00:01 to 2:05:00
The players tried to open one of the chests in the room with their polearms. The chest opened slightly but they could not see what was inside due to poor light. They then learned that there were no traps in the room and decided to open chests willy-nilly. Clarity cast a spell to find traps and found none. The group discovered that one of the chests contained 50,000 copper pieces, equivalent to current pennies. The game master explained how money works in the game world, with copper pieces being equivalent to pennies, silver pieces to dimes, gold pieces to dollars, and platinum pieces to five dollars.
2:05:01 to 2:10:00
The players found a chest with 50,000 copper pieces worth around $500. The next chest contained 10,000 silver pieces worth around $1,000 and another chest had 10,000 gold pieces worth around $10,000. A chest on the far right contained a thousand platinum pieces worth about $5,000, 15 gems worth around $150 each, and ten jewels worth around $1,000 each. The last chest on the very right had a glowing sword and three maces. The game master warned the players to be careful with moving the treasure as it could attract unwanted attention, especially since there was a vampire after them. The group decided to take a few handfuls of platinum pieces, the holy symbol, and some gems and jewels. The cleric held onto the holy symbol for now but the group had trouble figuring out how to add it to their inventory.
2:10:01 to 2:15:00
The players found a glowing sword that the game master added to their inventory as it might have magical properties that they would discover in combat. The group also found three maces, which could be used by characters with certain weapons like clerics, spit lawn, or Garrett. The assassin Clarity and Irina picked up one of the maces each, while Azdoroth and Mark (Clarity's character) were unable to use them. The game master moved one of the party members, Azdoroth, back to where the spiders were and decided to move the others later. They remembered that there was a secret door behind the fireplace in the room they were in.
2:15:01 to 2:20:00
The players returned to the room where they had previously encountered a spider and found a secret door by placing a torch in a wall sconce. They moved their characters back through this door and remembered that there was a broken roof and whispering statues in another hallway. After moving everyone down the stairs, the group headed right into a room where they would find Leif Lipsage, who had asked them to bring him the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind to assess its value from Strahd. In this role-play scene, Leif was excited about the necklace and expressed interest in inspecting it.
2:20:01 to 2:25:00
Leif Lipsage questioned whether the players could trust him as he had directed them to find the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind and they were hesitant to hand it over. After some discussion, Leif agreed to assess its value and promised to reveal the secret of how to use the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind if given the chance. The group handed over the necklace, and when asked to choose between their glowing sword or their original sword, they chose the former. Leif was surprised by this new addition and questioned whether it had been stolen from the treasury, but the players denied any wrongdoing.
Leif then inspected the symbol with a magnifying glass and jewelry eye piece, mumbling to himself and writing notes on it for a minute or two. After finishing his examination, he informed the group that the holy symbol was an ancient medallion made of platinum and that Strahd could not touch it because it is harmful to him and other undead creatures. If presented forcefully towards an undead creature, it would help turn them, and if presented to a vampire, it would light up with the light of the sun.
2:25:01 to 2:30:00
Leif Lipsage informed the group that the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind was a powerful medallion made of platinum and explained its properties to them. The players were grateful for the information and left the room, promising not to tell anyone about their encounter with Leif. He warned them to keep his secret, especially from Strahd. As they were leaving, one of the players asked where a particular door on the east side led to. Leif described it as a circular stairway that went up and down through many levels of the castle. The group then discussed their options, deciding that it was late in the evening and they should find a place to hide and rest. They considered the locations they had visited so far but were unsure of any good spots to barricade themselves. The players consulted their maps to review their options.
2:30:01 to 2:33:00
The group was given a summary of the rooms and areas they had explored on the previous floor (the main floor) and the one below it (the room they just came from). The main floor contained a large circular staircase, a secret area behind the organ, and other rooms, including a chapel. The DM suggested that the secret area behind the organ could be a good place to barricade themselves for the night. After confirming that there were no random encounters, the group decided to move their characters to this location on the main floor to rest for the night. The DM noted that they would start the next session here.
